Acoustic Zoom™ Service

PanGeo Subsea Inc. is developing a unique stationary Acoustic Lens™ and method that interrogates deep into the earth. One of the major limitations of current 3D and 4D surveys is that resolution at reservoir depths is often too coarse to be able to focus the seismic attributes to a specific compartment or feature of the reservoir. Acoustic Zoom™ service is a potentially transformative method for seismic data acquisition and processing that opens the potential to obtain higher frequency images and attributes at depth. The volume of the image or attribute built up through the use of beam forming and steering for vector seismic fields can be achieved with a much smaller installation and considerably less post-acquisition processing.

The method uses a purpose designed stationary array of vector wavefield receivers spaced to receive unambiguously higher frequency signals than normally would be seen in seismic surveys along with a dedicated array of high frequency, high powered programmable transmitters also stationary on the seabed or on land. The method  forms and steers a beam on both receive and on transmit  at a specific portion of the reservoir to capture both the specular and non-specular returns. This provides not only a superior more complete localization of the images (attributes) but also the potential for pseudo-real time processing of the data.

The Acoustic Zoom™ service is being designed to deliver:

  • Strategic information in improved reservoir management resulting from small infrastructure and minimal processing
  • More cost-effective means of obtaining data
  • Superior localization of the images (attributes)
  • Pseudo-real time processing of the data

Potential Imaging Targets

The Acoustic Zoom™ service architecture is designed to operate as a high-resolution adjunct to existing 2D and 3D seismic surveys. The standard seismic data set provides the regional context for directed high-resolution imaging aimed at specific target volumes.

This mode of operation should be effective for:

  • Between-well characterization of reservoir heterogeneity
  • High-resolution location of small offset faults and mapping of subtle variations in reservoir porosity
  • Testing and confirmation of the results of conventional time-lapse imaging through high-resolution spot probing of the time-lapse volumes
  • Significant potential for mapping lateral porosity variations associated with dolomitization and karstification in carbonate reservoirs associated with the systems  higher resolution and preservation of the scattered wave field associated while in scanning mode
  • Characterizing fracture intensity in fractured reservoirs
  • Characterizing and monitoring fracture systems induced as part of the production stimulation programs in shale gas reservoirs
